AT-14 Spriggan
Overview
The AT-14 Spriggan (Rus: 9M133 “Kornet” ["cornet"]) is a third-generation wire guided Anti-Tank Guided Missile developed by the Soviet Union in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Intended as a multi-platform, universal system to replace the SACLOS (Semi-Automatic Command-to-Line of Sight) guided AT-4/5, the AT-14 entered Russian Federation service in 1998. The system consists of the 9P163-1 launcher post (tripod) to which is fitted the 12-20x dual magnification 1P45-1 sight tracker and 1PN79-1 thermal sight - with the containerized missile above. Both more complex and more expensive than its AT-5 predecessor, the AT-14's performance is superior to that of the western TOW, BILL, and MILAN ATGM systems, featuring a more powerful warhead, much longer range, and a comparable 64kg ready fire weight, but slightly longer reload times. The modeled version is the 9P163M-1 Kornet-M launcher capable of firing the full 9M133 family of missiles (9M133-1 Kornet, 9M133M-2 Kornet-EM [extended 8000m range], and 9M133F-1 Kornet-E [thermobaric warhead]), but the laser guidance and auto-tracking features unique to the Kornet-EM is not available on the dismounted launcher. Although meant to replace the AT-4 and AT-5 the AT-14's high comparative cost has instead lead to it being used as a supplemental dismounted system with a greater emphasis vehicular applications. Widely exported and in great demand, the AT-14 is in use globally by at least twenty-five countries concentrated in Africa, the Near-East, and the Middle-East along with numerous non-state actors.
Employment
The observer position F8 displays a third-person view of the AT-14 team.
Pressing N provides a magnified third-person view (and only if the Realism setting is Low or Medium (Rev. 3.002)).
F7 or F11 switches to the first-person view of the "Squad Leader"/gunner.
Pressing N will brings the Squad Leader's binoculars into action. This can not be used to engage targets.
Pressing F2 accesses the weapon sights. From here the mouse or joystick may be used to aim, and the space bar/default trigger to fire. As with other SACLOS guided weapons, all the gunner needs to do is keep the reticle centered on the target. The sight features two magnification levels: 12x and 20x; the weapon may be fired at either magnification level. As with the MILAN, when the trigger is pressed the missile will be launched and the sudden weight reduction from the missile leaving the tube will cause the sight to drop, therefore a “sighting” point is provided. Below the center of the sight is a gap in the vertical wire. The tip of the lower wire serves as a sight post and once fired the sight will drop to match that point. |
|
The AT-14 features a 1PN79-1 thermal sight with a 4.8° wide FOV and 2.8° narrow FOV. As with other thermal sights in Steel Beasts Professional gain and contrast are fixed, but polarity can be toggled with the Num - key and focused by holding the CTL button while using the mouse-wheel. NVG (Night Vision Goggle) views for the squad leader/members (Num +) are available under appropriate lighting conditions if the team is so equipped (rev. 2.640). Note that NVGs are useful for observation only, and have no effect on weapon sights. |
|
Along the left side of the weapon sight is a descending stadia type scale used to determine target range. This should be used to ensure the desired target is within the AT-14's 100-5000m engagement envelope. |
