General
The M270 Multiple-Launch Rocket System (MLRS) is a all-weather, indirect, area fire weapon system intended to provide counter-battery or suppressive/destructive fires against enemy fire support, forward air defense, and high priority/high pay-off targets beyond the range of traditional tube artillery. Based off of the Bradley Fighting Vehicle the M270 began development as a joint project by France, Italy, the United Kingdom, the United States, and West Germany in late 1977. Formal production began in 1982 and the system is in use by at least fourteen nations world-wide including a majority of NATO members, Bahrain, Egypt, Israel, Japan, Saudi Arabia, and South Korea.
General layout of the M270 MLRS consists of two components: the M993 Carrier Vehicle and the M269 Loader Launcher Module (LMM). The tracked M993 is powered by a 500hp Cummins VTA903 V-8 diesel and carries a standard crew of 3: commander, driver, and section chief. The M269 LMM carries either two six-rocket launcher pods or two single-missile MGM-140 Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) pods which cannot be mixed on the same launcher. Note that because the extreme range and deep strike role of the ATACMS is beyond the normal tactical scale of Steel Beast Professional, this missile is not currently modeled.
Note: As currently implemented each M270 will fire all of its available rockets (12) per fire mission, therefore a standard launcher group (2) will deliver 24 rockets per mission with a minimum coverage area of 500x600m2 with 100% overlap or 1000x600m2/1200x500m2 with no overlap. This type of firepower is almost always controlled at Brigade level and higher therefore scenario designers should be cautious when giving players access to MLRS units.
Introduced with Steel Beasts Pro PE version 4.156 the M270 MLRS is fully functional as an indirect-fire artillery piece capable of firing player initiated HE/DPICM missions.
