May 2nd 1984

0. Background

Yesterday, the friendly elements to the south of your AO were attacked and pushed back significantly, resulting in a small encirclement of friendly forces. 12th Panzer Brigade command to the south has insisted that you prepare for an enemy attack in your sector with the enemy objective being to eliminate any possible German response to the encirclement from the north. It has fallen to us to hold the line against the advancing red tide and not allow them to force us out of the AO, lest the gap between the encircled friendly units and yourself is widened unsustainably.

I. Situation

Time:

0900 Local Time, sunset at 1844

Weather:

Lightly clouded with no precipitation imminent, 15 degrees Centigrade and LOS 4000m. Wind direction E at 4 m/s

    I. General

In expectation of an imminent attack by Russian forces far outnumbering your own, the commands of the 104th Panzerbatallion and the 371st Panzergrenadierbatallion have been ordered to combine to aid eachother's defense and coordinate a counterattack should the opportunity present itself.

    a. Terrain and ground:

The terrain in the area is well suited for defense, with rolling hills and ridgelines in the north and dense woods with only narrow roads running through them in the south. The terrain should be used to the upmost to secure your positions.

    b. Current Situation.

Forward scouting units from the 371st Pz.Gdr.Btl were dispatched late last night around 0100 in order to determine the composition and strength of the enemy units known to be amassing to the east, and reported back with the estimation of 1 full battalion of Mechanized infantry, 1 depleted battalion of tanks, plus a thin screen forward that the scouts were able to slip by undetected. The scouts were able to determine the unit IDs of the enemy, as stated on the map.

Your units were largely unable to create dug in positions in either the north or the south due to both a lack of time and a lack of available engineering assets, which had been tasked elsewhere. This is with exception of a select few hasty trenches dug along main routes through the 371st's area of responsibility.

    B. Enemy Forces

        I. Strength:

        1 Battalion Mechanized
        1 Battalion (-) Armoured
Recon screen, composition and exact strength unknown but strength known to at least be lower than usual.
        Enemy reinforcement unlikely. Confidence: Moderate

        II. Equipment:

Scouts reported identification of T72 tanks of a fair vintage, either T72 Urals or T72As. While older, these are still a threat to your similarly outdated Leopard 1A4s.

Scouts reported identification of BMP2 IFVs, with full or nearly full compliment of troops.

Scouts had difficulty getting close enough to see the enemy infantry weapons available, as the time of night made verification of their equipment via the day optic impossible.

        III. Quality:

The GSFG 17th Guards Motor Rifle is a relatively new division, and its current leaders were promoted hastily following a series of previous Russian defeats that saw the first command of the division relieved of command. The command of the division should be expected to be inexperienced and shortsighted and its men inexperienced.

        IV. ENY CoA:

Enemy will likely begin with a rapid assault down the hills making up the FWD SCT line with the intention of displacing and destabilizing the defense of your units. Once this assault has either been stopped or has moved through your first positions, the actions of the command will be one of two options. They will likely either stop or regroup around Fleice if they were uncoordinated or took significant losses without significant gain, or if they succeed in pushing your defenses back, may continue to attack in a pincer through the south and north of the AO with the intention to converge on either Steigel or Fransözichhausen to further disrupt and cut off your defenses. From there the enemy can be expected to push through to Tetelhausen and capture Tetelhausen and Fransözischhausen.

Confidence about the above enemy CoA: High

    C. Friendly Forces (FF).

1 company of tanks from the 104th Panzerbatallion, stationed in the northern half of the AO. The tank company should be expected to engage only at long range with the enemy where possible, attritting and grinding down the enemy armour and mechanized vehicles as much as possible.

1 company minus of mechanized infantry from 371st Pz.Gdr.Btl stationed along the southern half of the AO. The Mech should be expected to fight through the forest, organizing ambushes of the enemy columns in order to maximize the number of casualties dealt to the enemy.

1 company minus of reconnaissance assets from the 371st, stationed along the FWD SCT line. These units should serve as a tripwire to allow the commanders to determine where to best assign their forces to achieve the overall goal. Once these units make contact, they should be evacuated if at all possible or else face destruction.

Air superiority HAS been achieved, though all available CAS flights are being used to soften up enemy positions around the encircled battalion to the south.

A single battery of mortars has been allocated to each command for own use, and the artillery assets available to both commands have been pooled into a single artillery element to provide maximum support and flexibility. Commanders will need to communicate about the use of artillery as to not leave the other with no artillery support.
            6 Howitzers per battery
            2 Batteries
60 HE, 60 SMK, NO ICM

II. Mission:

Inflict as many losses on the advancing Russian units as possible, trading land for time where necessary to ensure own survival.

III. Execution

    a. Commanders Intent

Purpose - Buy as much time for units to the north and south of your sector to stablize in order to mount a counterattack against the encirclement directly to your south. Destruction of the enemy attack before they reach Tetelhausen or Fransözischhausen is highly regarded, however should these villages fall you should mount a counterattack immediately if at all possible.

        Key Tasks:

            1. Stop the enemy advance before they reach Tetelhausen or Fransözischhausen.
            2. Destroy the enemy attack, particularly the armoured vehicles.

    b. Fires

        Per the Friendly Forces section.

    d. Aviation

        Not available for either side.

    e. Mobility/Counter-Mobility

No engineers available for BLUE commanders, assume RED has engineering assets available.

IV. Sustainment

Elements of the 104th have ONE repair M113 and ONE medic available, as well as FOUR logistics vehicles to supply the tanks.

Elements of the 371st have NO repair vehicles, ONE medic, and NO logistics vehicles.

Commanders of both elements are informed that exchange of supporting assets is not advised but is permitted.

V. Command And Signal

Map contacts are OFF. You will need to communicate efficiently with your fellow soldiers to ensure no enemy slips by.
    Friendly ID is ON.

VI. Notes

Your Leo 1A4s do not possess laser rangefinders. Highly advise you premeasure your distances with the map.
