4.397 Issue with damaged Thermals in Leopard 2A6MA2?

Good morning,

 

During today's session with the Germans, my vehicle took a kit and sustained damage to the "Thermal Imager".

 

The thermal view for the gunner was disabled, no surprise there:

 

 

However, the Crew Commander's GPS Extension remained functioning:

 

 

Given its an extension to the Gunner's primary sight and presumably shares the same channel, should the thermal image be disabled in both views?

 

Alternatively, given I can see the MG3, perhaps this isn't really the GPS extension (which I suspect wouldn't see this) and its a naming / terminology issue and this view is really more like the M1s CITV?

So the second picture of your post shows the view through the commanders TIM which is built into the Peri. A thermal imaging sight that offers comparable functionality to the M1 Abrams CITV. If only the GPS is damaged the TIM would obviously still offer a thermal channel to look through. This is also the reason you can see the MG 3 in the picture because the TIM is mounted on the roof the the turret.

If you look at the control panel that is visible in your second screenshot you see in the middle at the bottom a setting that reads "Video" with two small LED's. One says "EMES" and the other one "TIM". In your screenshot "TIM" is illuminated indicating that you are not making use of the GPSE. To change you would either have to enter KH HZF mode or press the button located directly below where it reads "Video".

I will quickly check your file to see if the GPSE is indeed usable or not.

So as you mentioned the GPS doesn't display the thermal channel anymore since it is damaged.

 

 

Now if you activate KH HZF the display is black.

 

 

It is also black when manually pressing the button to switch between the channels.

 

 

Please note that in both of my later screenshots the LED in the bottom center reads "EMES". The "EMES" is the sight system of the Leopard 2.

I had assumed that since I had selected “GPS Extension” from the Crew Commander’s “view” menu that I was in fact looking through the GPS Extension.

A justified assumption I would argue.

Just in case it helps you or anybody else a quick explanation. 

On the Leopard 2A4 there's an eyepiece for the vehicle commander to look through. Both the "EMES" GPSE and the "Peri" musst be viewed through this eyepiece. There's is a switch that toggles between the two options. Pressing F2 will show the GPSE while pressing F3 will result in the view through the Peri. So pressing F2 or F3 doesn't actually change what optic you look through but what that optic displays. (Therefore clicking on “GPS Extension” from the Crew Commander’s “view” menu will actually display the GPSE.)

On the Leopard 2A5 and other version with the new Peri that eyepiece was moved to the left and no longer has the option to show the GPSE. Instead the GPSE can be displayed in the display for the TIM (which is integrated in the Peri). So pressing F2 will show the display and pressing F3 will show the Peri. (Therefore your virtual commander would need to move his head from one spot to another.)

Per default the display shows the TIM and not the GPSE.

 

I guess this was coded in Steel Beasts as is to keep it simple and not making it overcomplicated with additional keybinds.

To reiterate, in order for the display to show the GPSE you can either:
- Activate KH HZF which allows the vehicle commander to take control over the GPS and use (most of) the fire control system himself. The display automatically switches to GPSE when KH HZF is activated and it also switches back when the mode is deactivated again.

 

-To look through the GPSE without activating KH HZF you need to click F2, click on the screen and move your mouse onto the button below where it reads "Video". 

 

 

 

But yes you are correct, it does indicate that you would be looking through the GPSE even though you aren't.

I hope this isn't too confusing.
