OPERATION: DOORSTOP 

 

DATE: FEB 24 1986

 

0. Background.
    45km south of Hannover, the survivors of the war's first action around Fulda have dug in once again, now protecting the south of the major city from the onslaught of Soviet armour flooding into the Fulda Gap. After holding against a number of major assaults from the southeast and south, your brigade commander believes it prudent to attack after several reconnaissance sorties discovered fewer enemy units now than the weeks before. Suggesting that there was a window of opportunity upon us, brigade received permission from division to conduct a limited assault to test the waters and attempt to regain some lost ground from the Red Wave.

 

1. Weather, Conditions, Terrain.
    Cloudy with intermittent light rain throughout. Visibility roughly 2800m.
    9C°, 1m/s SE wind.
    The terrain in the west is filled with forests and hills, which provide good cover from indirect and long range fire though limit speed. The terrain in the east of your AO is more open, with only discrete treelines dividing long open corridors. Marking your borders is the large Weser river in the west, and a line of forested cliffs to the east.

 

2. Mission.
    I. General.
        Brigade command has issued orders to conduct a limited assault south-southeast along the brigade's frontline stretching from the Weser river in the west to Bockenem in the east. Your combat force comprises the westernmost quarter of this frontline, and thus, being on the flank, your success is paramount.
    
    II. Current Situation.
        Forward scouts reported in 4 hours ago after completing a reconnaissance on the enemy's positions and composition. Their forward line of contact is marked on the maptrace, as well as an apparent enemy stronghold around the agricultural development hub west of Wegensen. Further recon became impossible after the scouts were engaged by fire from the Agricultural hub and area surrounding Dohnsen by large caliber guns, either dug in tanks or AT guns.

 

    III. Orders.
        Conduct a limited assault to the south-southeast up to OBJ KING and OBJ QUEEN IOT determine the level of enemy resistance to be expected in further attacks. Once OBJ KING and OBJ QUEEN have been captured, establish hasty defenses around both objectives to defeat any possible enemy counterattack. Capture of the bridges at OBJ ABLE will aid future resupply and reinforcement, though are to be considered secondary objectives.

    IV. Enemy.
        Recon reports enemy composition as follows...    

 

        i. Equipment.
            TNK: T-72A
            IFV: BMP-2
            PC:  BTR-70
        
        ii. Strength.
            ~1 Coy Mechanized at the FLEC. Enemy strength beyond the FLEC is unknown, though extrapolation from what other sectors have reported leaves around 1 Btn (-) of motor rifle units remaining.

 

        iii. CoA.
            Enemy appears to have set up a strong defensive line roughly where the FLEC lies. Expect them to hold in these positions until their line is broken, after which they will likely set up another line in vicinity of OBJ KING and OBJ QUEEN. Enemy counterattack is possible following the destruction of their second line.

 

        iv. Support. 
            3-4 Batteries of heavy artillery with ICM and HE.

 

    V. Friendly.
        i. Equipment.
            TNK: M1IP
            IFV: M2A1 Bradley

 

        ii. Strength.
            1 Coy (+) of M1IPs moving in from the north. 1 Plt in reserve.
            1 Coy of Bradlies moving in from the northwest. 1 Plt in reserve.

 

        iii. Support.
            2x Batteries of offmap artillery.
            Ammo per tube:
            30x HE
            30x SMK
            6x  ICM

 

            1x Battery of mortars.
            Ammo per tube:
            51x HE
            18x ICM

 

        iv. Sustainment.
            Medics: 2x
            ARVs:   2x
            Supply: 4x

    VI. Execution Instructions.
        
        i. CoA.
            Briefed by CO.
        ii. Objectives.
            Reference ORDERS section, appended by any additional tasking by CO.

        iii. Restrictions.
            AO limits are the Weser river and the mild cliffs in the west and east respectively. The enemy is not restricted to your AO.
