OPERATION: Päälo

Part 2, Concentrated attack

DATE: Jan 10 2006

0. Background.
As the Russo-Finnish border war enters it's third month, a blitheringly cold Siberian wind floods over Karelia and stops most major movement of forces, turning the ground into stone and oil into a thick ice that must be heated for up to an hour before an engine can be started. Up until now, the Finnish "Exploratory task force" into Russian Karelia has been biding its time against enemy probing attacks, waiting for the perfect opportunity to strike. What better time to strike as when your enemy has been fixed into their own dugouts?

1. Weather, Conditions, Terrain.
Intermittent snowfall can be expected throughout the next hour to hour and a half.
    Visibility fluctuating between 2-3km.
Most roads have been snowed over.
    1200 hours, sunrise was 0816.
Air operations are impossible in this weather.

Terrain is hilly, with a number of forests of varying sizes dividing the landscape into distinct engagement areas. There are many opportunities to flank or be flanked by concealed movements within these treelines.

2. Mission.
    I. General.
Upon the completion of the recon mission to determine weaknesses in the enemy's line, the recon forces retreated back to the forward scouting line and dug in to hold position until they were relieved. Unfortunately, the restrictive weather meant that the infantry could not be spread out much from their vehicles else they risked freezing to death, so there are some gaps in the line that need to be filled.

    II. Current Situation.
Your forces have been ordered to move forward and plug the few gaps in the friendly scouting line, turning it into a proper defensive line in preparation for any enemy retaliation.

    III. Orders.
TF Seymor moves EAST at best speed to dig in along the FSL, preparing for possible enemy retaliation. In the event of an enemy retaliatory strike, TF command should develop a plan for pursuit and further assault against the enemy's line as they attempt to reorganize after their attack.

        i. Checklist:
        Dig in along the FSL.
        Hold against any enemy counterattack.
Pursue and destroy the enemy attacking force and main line.

        Secondary:
Find any enemy HVTs and destroy them.

    IV. Enemy.
        i. Equipment.
Russian forces around Finland are using some of the best equipment available to them in the northern parts of Russia, and experienced soldiers are still bountiful.

        Tank: T72B obr.85 / 89
        PC: BTR-70/80
        IFV: BMP-2/3

        ii. Strength.
Was roughly 1 Coy (-) after recon finished, though they will likely have been reinforced.

        iii. CoA.
The enemy is expected to begin with a counterattack with the intention of destroying our weak defensive line and disrupting our concentration efforts. Depending on how this results for them, they will either press their advantage or retreat to reinforce their own line.

        iv. Support.
Significant, exact quantities unknown but they are known to possess ICM. Expect modern SP systems that can fire quickly and accurately.

    V. Friendly.
        i. Equipment.
Top of the line for what Finland can offer, including the best ammunition. Infantry is using PzFst 3s to represent the French purchased MPAT.

        ii. Strength.
        1 Company of 2A4s
        2 Mechanized combat teams. (3 CV90s, 2 T72M1s, 1 BTR each)

        iii. Support.
Your close in support is in the form of 3 brand new Mjolnir mortar systems. Battalion level artillery is now available, in the form of 2 batteries of 2S3 Akatsiyas.

        iv. Sustainment.
        Medics: 2
        ARVs:   2
        Supply: 6

Full compliment of supporting assets, complete with dedicated ammo trucks for the artillery.

    VI. Execution Instructions.

        i. Restrictions.
Black lines running west to east across the top and bottom are the AO. Do not exit these lines.

3. Scenario

    I. Notes.
Do not attempt to reheat frostbitten fingers or toes near a flame or other open heat source.
