OPERATION: GRANBY

D+ OP START: 1

DATE: JAN 18 1991

0. Background.
The First Gulf War, a dedicated effort by a coalition of 34 countries to liberate Kuwait from the invading Iraqis, ran from 2 August 1990 to the 28 February 1991. The combat phase to liberate Kuwait, code named Operation Desert Storm, ran from 17 January 1991 to the 28 February 1991.

Operation Granby was the code name given to the British end of military operations which saw some 53,462 members of the British Armed Forces on land, sea and air, deployed during the conflict. The British land contribution was initially 7th Armoured Brigade but in November 1990 this increased to 1st Armoured Division, consisting of 4th and 7th Armoured Brigades, and became some 35,000 men and women strong.

You are the forward combat element of the British forces in your area, and you've just been given orders to move to the south of Kuwait city and capture a large airfield that can be used to aid in supplying the operation of the British forces in the area.

1. Weather, Conditions, Terrain.
    Sunny with light cloud cover.
    No precipitation throughout.
    1000 Hours, sunset at 1853.

The area directly to your south contains a valley flanked on either side by ridges, on which a fairly sparse distribution of trees provides minor visual cover except at long range. The terrain in the valley is very flat and contains very few places to find cover from shells. Conversely, the terrain on the ridges is quite rough and contains many small locations that can serve as hull down positions in a pinch. Lastly, there is a small stream extending partly down the center of the AO that inconveniently divides the AO into two distinct halves.

2. Mission.

    I. Current Situtation.
Your forces are set up in an assembly area roughly 3km behind the starting line. The starting line itself is being held by friendly light reconnaissance forces.

Enemy forces are set up in defensive positions roughly 2-4km to the south of the starting line. Enemy forces are known to be dug in to an extent, including most of their fighting vehicles in Vehicle emplacements.

    II. Orders.
Task force EAGLE is to advance past the starting line and assault the enemy positions and capture the Kuwait International airport in order to help supply friendly forces in the area. Should time and remaining forces permit, they should continue their attack towards the town of Mulftan to clear out the known enemy strongpoint.

    III. Enemy.
        i. Equipment.
Enemies are known to be using older Soviet equipment and their infantry is somewhat undiciplined and inexperienced, for the most part. But do not underestimate them when in the defence.

        Tank: T-55/T-62/T-72M
        IFV:  BMP-1 and BMP-2
        APC:  BTR-60
Supporting assets like ATGM carriers, technicals or primitive AA vehicles are possible.
Finally dismounted ATGM Teams are a clear threat: likely to either be AT-3d or AT-5a's.

        ii. Strength.
Enemy strength expected to be up to a battalion +/- a company spread across 2-3 defensive lines in the AO.

        iii. CoA.
Enemy will likely begin with a delay in order to give their units time to organize and set up defensive positions forward or at the 17th northing. Once the enemy has finished setting up their defensive positions, they can be expected to transition to a static defense of the airport and neighboring town to inflict as many casualties as possible.

Be aware that ENY ENG assets have been seen wiring bridges to the south of Jalibad for destruction. Expect them to be blown as you approach - you have 2 x Biber for this contigency but they can only bridge so far, so there is a risk that you might have to detour if one bridge is not passable.

        iv. Support.
The Iraqi airforce has been destroyed entirely well over a month prior, and thus air superiority has been gained.

Iraqi artillery units are still functional and in the area, expect maybe 3 batteries of artillery to be trained on your AO.

    IV. Friendly.
        i. Equipment.
The British have opted to bring the new and powerful Challenger 1 to the operation in the middle east instead of the reliable and tested Chieftain. This means you have some of the most capable tanks in NATO at your disposal. The crews in the Challengers are some of the best we have and are, at least in the short term, irreplacable.

        Tank: Challenger 1 (squint)
        IFV:  Warrior (With Missiles)
        REC:  Scimitar/Scorpion
        AVLB: ChAVLB (squint harder)
        FO:   Warrior (No missile)
        AEV: Centurion AVRE 105

        ii. Strength.
1 Company of combined Mechanized and Armoured units, plus a subordinated Recon platoon stationed at the SL. Reinforcements are available in limited numbers.

        iii. Support.
You have 2 batteries of artillery from the 40th royal artillery regiment, as well as an FO from said regiment.
        Ammo per tube (6x2)
        HE:  42
        SMK: 30
        ICM: 6

Additional to the heavy artillery, you also have a battery (6 tubes) of Self-propelled 120 mm mortars available for closer targets.

Not only do you have artillery on call, but there is also a flight of CAS on standby should you need an airstrike. 5 total airstrikes are available.

WARNING: Coalition airpower have been granted Free Fire Zones to your East and West (reference maptrace), IOT safeguard your flanks. Do NOT enter them under any circumstances, as there have already been blue-on-blue, and the Air assets will destroy anything seen moving in these areas.

        iv. Sustainment.
        Medics: 2
        ARVs:   2
        Supply: 4

Dedicated Supply for SPMTR: 3 (do not use them for anything else, simulating that they only carry MTR ammo)

A full compliment of CSS assets are available. (Squint really hard.)

    V. Execution.

        i. Suggested CoA.
Use your tanks atop either ridge overlooking through the valley to destroy enemy targets at long range before sending in the mechanized to methodically clear every enemy outpost.

        ii. Objectives.
        1. Capture the airfield.
        2. If forces and time permits, move south and capture Mulftan.

3. Scenario

    I. Notes.
        Friendly ID:  ON
        Map contacts: ONLY FRIENDLY

Observe!

UK supporting assets have been increased. There is now a full battery of mortars as well as a proper armoured engineer attachment, complete with Centurion AVRE 105s.

Not sure if someone has taken it but happy to drive the AVREs if you want (curious as to what you take on an AVRE is - I'm assuming no demolition gun or fascines).

I notice that the manning (staffing) list hasn't changed.

Am I getting up at 0430 to attend or not?

Happy either way, but would rather not get up early and find that someone else is doing it.

So this has slipped between the cracks somehow, I only now noticed that you didnt get a reply.

The Avres were deliberatly put in for Kingtiger so he has something to do while not doing Fires.

So sadly these are not open for manning.
