Walking the Fenceline

6th May 1984

0. Background

4 months ago, tensions between the GDR and the FRG flared to a breaking point that resulted in the GDR along with (what NATO intelligence believed would be) the GSFG invading the FRG. The FRG and its NATO allies then nearly immediately were left unimpressed by the joint Soviet-East German invasion, as it was halted just a few days after it began, only capturing a few dozen kilometers of West German land.

NATO forces spent a few days preparing their own offensive into East Germany to liberate Berlin, which had also to that point resisted the pressure despite being hundreds of kilometers from help. In all respects, the NATO counterassault performed markedly better than the initial Bloc attack and quickly rolled over much of East Germany, retaking the rest of Berlin in just more than a week.

Once Berlin was captured, however, it was discovered why the initial Bloc assault performed so poorly. Intelligence reports stated that due to a recent breakdown in communications between East Germany and the Soviet Union, the Soviets had been in the process of extracting from East Germany entirely, fearing that the GSFG would wind up surrounded and subsequently captured by (what the Russians believed) would be a freshly united Germany. Thus, the Bloc's initial assault was exclusively made up of GDR units that resultingly defected to the West in droves.

During this complete breakdown of central European diplomacy that nearly resulted in a three-way war, Poland and Czechloslavakia have remained curiously silent and appear to not have aided the Soviets or East Germans in any way after hostilities first began. Because of this, they should currently be considered neutral.

I. Situation

    Time:

        1750
        Sunset at 1858

    Weather:

Overcast cloud cover with none to light precipitation expected. Expect fog to form as night approaches. 14°C, No wind.

    I. General

This is the Reconaissance phase of the assault that will break the GDR into two halves along the Polish border. Your mixed company has been tasked with performing a reconnaissance by fire through the final sliver of GDR territory in order to allow the rest of the battalion to split the GDR and then widen the North-South gap as much as possible.

Do NOT move too close to (500m) the Polish border, or otherwise risk sparking another war. Should the Polish commit to a surprise attack, retreat immediately and regroup with the rest of your battalion for a hasty defense.

Reinforcements for your recon company are to be reserved EXCLUSIVELY FOR EMERGENCIES like if you run into heavy resistance and need to retreat. This is because these units are meant to move along with the battalion's attack, not your reconnaissance mission.

    a. Terrain and ground:

Large open areas combined with thick woods and an abundance of small townships and farms. The road network is fairly dense and most of the major roads are named. The terrain itself is quite uneven and there are many small dips or hills that may provide cover for movement.

The enemy can be expected to be dug in to a fair extent, and this area of Eastern Germany is home to a number of bunkers that vary in size dating back to the second world war. Even if they're of such antiquity, these bunkers can be expected to take some effort to destroy and should be bypassed if possible.

There are a number of small water features dotted around the AO that can be hard to see on the map, watch where you're driving.

    b. Current Situation.

Enemy has been forced to defend what we suspect is an ammunition depot just off of H119. Due to the likely presence of civillians, we cannot simply hit the suspected depot with artillery. You will either need to get in yourself and determine what exactly is there, or appropriately mark enemy positions to be hit with artillery and destroyed with the accompanying attack.

Expect a dug in enemy, to what extent is uncertain but definitely at least partially entrenched and at least some (>5) vehicle emplacements.

    B. Enemy Forces

        I. Strength:

Exact number is your job to determine. Definitely exceeding 1 Coy.

        II. Equipment:

The GDR have been running with outdated equipment for an extended period of time, and this is no different in your sector. Previous encounters have shown the enemy to consist of the following:

            - T55As, with an even-more-outdated-than-normal ammunition loadout.
            - BMP1s, which have been proven to in fact be more dangerous than the T55s, at least to the Marder.
            - BMP2s, in very limited numbers and possibly not even a complete platoon.
            - BDRM/BTRs, in somewhat of an abundance. Possibly freshly supplied from the Soviet Union, more likely that they          simply had an incredible amount of them pre-war.

Those same previous encounters have yeilded a number of captured weapons that also show what infantry AT weapons are available.

            - Malyutka/Sagger ATGMs with limited reloads. Suppose 4 missiles per position.
            - Fagot/Spigot ATGMs with even more limited reloads. Suppose 2 missiles per position.
            - RPG-7VS MPAT, the GDR seems to have exhausted or otherwise lost its supply of the more effective RPG-7VLs.

        III. Quality:

The GDR is at this point scraping the bottom of the barrel with their conscripts. Those who havent fled the country already are about to, so the only ones left to recruit are those who can't leave.

Prisoners especially, which have been known to be used in droves to buy time for the more experienced units. Fortunately for NATO, even while employing this tactic the GDR has nearly nothing left of its more hardened units.

Expect highly demotivated conscripts that are slow to react.

        IV. MDA:

Enemy is in a prepared defense of both their depot and the Kazam railway line. Expect them to use the bunkers left over in the area from world war 2.

Other enemy constructed defenses are NOT expected, though anything that can be done by hand or with a shovel IS expected. Unknown number and position of enemy minefields.

        V. ENY CoA:

Enemy will likely try to employ a static defense of their positions from which they intend to inflict as many casualties as possible.

Counterattack from the north or south unlikely but possible should you be too slow in completing your objectives.

Enemy is not expected to hold their positions for an extended time.

    C.Friendly Forces (FF).

You have been assigned command of a mixed company, comprising of 2 tank platoons and 1 mechanized platoon with which you will move forward.

Reinforcements are ONLY FOR EMERGENCIES and are NOT to be called in UNLESS EXFIL IS REQUIRED.

Air assets are available. 5 sorties can be called in on hard targets.

Artillery is not available at the moment, but all targets you mark will be shelled in preparation of the main attack.

II. Mission:

Reconnaissance by fire to the East Northeast in order to determine...:

    1. enemy forward line and breach it.
    2. enemy main line.
    3. the extent to which the enemy has dug in, and the precise positions of the fortifications.
    4. if possible and prudent, the nature of the enemy depot.
    5. total strength of the enemy.

III. Execution

    a. Commanders Intent

Purpose - Create a path and designate targets both for artillery and a follow on assault with the ultimate objective of splitting the GDR in two.

        Key Tasks:

                  As per Mission section.

        End State:

Friendly: Return to starting area once all four objectives are completed with as few casualties as possible.

Enemy: Forward line disrupted, main targets marked for artillery that will commence soon after your reconnaissance has finished.

    c. Fires

No artillery available, though fires will commence on marked targets once you have finished your recon.

    d. Aviation

5 strike flights with CAS aircraft to hit blocking targets. Do not use them against single vehicles.

    e. Mobility/Counter-Mobility

        Friendly: NIL
Enemy:   Possible, and likely. If spotted, destroy on sight.

    f. Coordinating Instructions

        1. ROE

            Minimize damage to Civillian property.

Do NOT, under ANY CIRCUMSTANCES breach the Polish border.

Should the Polish launch a surprise attack, call off the recon mission immediately and regroup back at base for a hasty defence.

IV. Sustainment

Supply: NIL. You are stuck with what you have to start, don't waste ammo.
Repair: NIL. If any callsigns are lost, they will be recovered after the main attack moves through the area.
Medic:  ONE. You have 1 medic available to provide emergency care to the wounded.

V. Command And Signal

    Friendly ID: On
    Map Contacts: Off
    Communication: Per SOP

VI. Map Notes

The blue lines running W to E are the north and south borders. Moving past them may result in destruction by enemy fire.
