zloy.technic Posted March 29 Share Posted March 29 Hi all A couple of months ago I switched to Linux. One of the reasons I keep a second Windows system is SB. However, I eventually managed to run SB on Linux. To do this, I needed to install the native CodeMeter and port Proton software. Port Proton is an implementation of Valve Wine without Steam. This implementation is written by programmers from Russia, so I did not find instructions in English, but you can use a translator - it's easy. https://linux-gaming.ru/t/ustanovka-portproton-ispolzovanie-wine-proton-bez-steam/24 Since port Proton uses Valve's work, I think SB will launch using the original Proton that comes with Steam. When installing SB, I did NOT install the windows version of CodeMeter. Wine itself translates requests to the system service into Linux. I use: Debian 12 Bookworm Kernerl liquorix native linux CodeMeter Steel Beasts 4.379 GPU: nvidia 1050ti + proprietary driver *In my case, the key is physically located on another computer and is accessed via the local network. The proposed software is open source. At the same time, for people like you, I indicated that you can install Steam and use its implementation upd. The map transfer utility does not work. The mission editor is working The simulator breaks if you run the mission from the editor, but if you save it and run it from the main menu, everything works fine. I'm not suggesting you install Steam or anything else. Everything works for you and you are satisfied with everything - which means you don’t need to change anything. However, other people may find it useful to learn about possible ways to run the simulator on other operating systems. Maybe when I get around to it, I'll try making a Proton bottle and see how that goes. Proton and Wine are making progress fast so I'm pretty hopeful we'll get SB to work without dual booting. SippyCup Posted May 26 Share Posted May 26 Well, this is a pleasant thread to see up. Just a heads-up: Lutris works great for me... been using it for years. Things have gotten very good over the past 3 years in particular. It's great for installing and organising games across platforms and lets you swap runners quickly and easily and configure games (if you even have to). Save for some of the older titles, it's just been a plug-and-play experience for me, whether installing from a game client or with local installers/physical media. No issues at all with Steel Beasts including launching in Test Mode from Mission Editor. As noted above though, don't install the Windows version of Codemeter when installing via Wine, just use the Linux instance. Installing games is simple as is running them. It's extremely lightweight as well. I'm using Lutris on 3 of my machines, each using a different distro and it's been great. Here are screenshots from 2 of them. I've played a lot more games than this. This is just what's currently installed. I would also like to point out that Linux has better legacy support for Windows games than Windows does at this point. Getting old stuff to run in Wine is pretty easy. It's gotten to the point that I don't even dual boot on all but one PC at the moment, and that's just for work. I don't like to jinx myself so won't say anything else. If I were the type to jinx myself though, I'd say something along the lines of "all of my games have higher performance in Linux and I haven't had a single game crash using Proton or Wine, via Steam or Lutris to date". But I won't say that, just in case. Yes I play a gacha game. Feel free to roast me. Hope this can be of some help. Any questions, feel free to ask. Grabbed the CodeMeter Linux Runtime (.deb because Linux Mint is Debian based.) from the Wibu-Systems Website. No fiddeling with settings whatsoever, it just works. My CodeMeter Dongle works. Made a little mission in the editor, played it, performance is as usual. I didn't test any MultiPlayer, other simulator's MP like DCS or IL2 work in Lutris fine so I'd assume it works too. Tldr: Lutris good, SB good - Good times! Edit: Should the text look weird, install Arial, in Lutris just select the game and click the wine glass on the bottom. I went down this rabbit hole sometime back when I picked up a steam deck (runs on an Arch distro that is heavily customised I believe?) and can confirm that SB would easily work on it BUT ran into the brick wall regarding the codemeter software as I couldn't find a working version for that. I have tried Proton to install the windows flavour of the codemeter software but that seems to not like the environment. BaLrOg_70 Posted September 14 Share Posted September 14 Appreciate the suggestion but with steam deck the situation is a little more unique (and partly down to valve using a less main stream distro of linux) currently the codemeter linux distro comes in three flavours .rpm .deb and a tar file none of which are compatible with the valve flavour of linux They also did some locking down of the root FS but this is not a SB issue this is just a tinkering on my part its been a good way to burn a few hours trawling forums 0 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
