Hello.

The SB AI appears to regressed in the obstacle handling dept.

They are attempting to drive from the right to the left in the above image

As you can see the small concete barriers have been demolished by carefully placed IEDs, to remove said obstacles

Same again in the map view

As you can see they have nice, neat routes in column across from the assembly area (right hand grouping ) across the border (marked by the red line) annnnd.....well.......then it all goes to shit. 🙄

As I recall, the AI could handle this in version 4.1

(We even played a multiplayer game, which cavgunner recorded, so we know it used to work. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=biuhdmy8tZI )

No.

Depending on how you set your options (in both the Mission Editor and while playing), holding or not holding the "ALT" key:

If you put a tick next to that you hold the ALT key and then create the route to get a NAVMESH route. No tick, then all routes will be NAVMESH, unless you hold down the ALT key.

NAVMESH routes tend not to be needed for aerial platforms (Helo, UAS, etc.) as they fly over the buildings, walls, etc.

Ground units may or may not need to use NAVMESH.

Driving through a cluttered urban area may need it to drive around buildings, etc.

However be careful as NAVMESH will make the vehicle drive around - road safety barriers, hedges, and other items that you may want the vehicle to drive through.

Otherwise you may end up with the vehicle driving around the hedge say, leaving it intact, just to be destroyed because it didn't use the covered approach that driving through the hedge may have provided.

While strictly technically speaking it may not always be required to have Navmesh support enabled (at least it would not be immediately noticeable when plotting routes), it does however enable the "higher cognitive functions" of AI controlled vehicles to handle dynamic obstacles (obstacles that may appear between the moment of plotting the route and the vehicles actually taking that route).

In short, there's practically no downside whatsoever to have Navmesh support enabled from version 4.0 and up, aside from UAVs and helicopters that might start making funny flight maneuvers when going over urban terrain. For them (and only for them), disabling Navmesh use makes sense.

Perhaps in trying to type quickly before driving, I glossed over what I was trying to get across.

What I suggest (happy to be corrected) in the above instance is:

1. A NAVMESH enabled route segment up to "just short" of where the wall is/was to take advantage of the points above.

2. A short (10m or so) non NAVMESH route segment in order force the unit to cross the remains of the wall.

3. A NAVMESH enabled route segment for the travel beyond the wall.

All of those would be in the same route, just that some segments (the lines between the black dots) would be NAVMESH'd and some not.

As per the video comments the one route can have a combination of SHIFT click, ALT click, no modifier key click, etc.
