Map Editor

Been away from the game for a long while. Having read through Ssnakes last posts I am wondering what new buildings will be added in the upgrade, he suggested a lot but I cannot find anything outlining what we can expect, anyone have any ideas ?.

PS: Meant to add I have been playing with DCS Black Shark, not bad for a helo sim but the Mission Editor is not up this standard by a long way, cannot wait to get stuck back into creating maps and really hoping for some decent building shapes to play with.

Sad news, I had been looking forward to this upgrade all year with expectations of an improvement in what is a really poor aspect of this sim. All we needed was a couple of dozen basic shapes and we could create the skins to make them into half decent buildings that we can populate this rather empty landscape with. A church, a huge oil tank, a few house shapes and a pointless Castle and Wind Farm do nothing much for me.

So, it's not going to happen for a long time yet then - Really disappointed.

I understand the frustration. We had the word of the program manager but apparently the paperwork took longer or was finally stopped by red tape. For a while we assumed that it would still happen, just with a delay.

Now that we can't be sure about this anymore we have taken matters in our own hands, and have started working on a system that will allow us to assemble buildings more flexibly from "prefab" parts instead of having fixed elements in an object library. This system is also supposed to help with partial destruction of buildings.

You don't create this overnight. But I can assure you, whenever there is unused time in the 3D model creation, we will use the time for the new buildings. Of course we need to replace the current building types with the new system as well in addition to new objects so that old maps can be converted to take advantage of the new solution. I can't say when we will see this, but I can assure you that we have every intention to make it happen, irrespective of army funding.

So reading this thread I am wondering what else may have been taken out from what I have read in other threads? Any of the below that were said to be in the next update?

1.Civilian cars and other non-targets with a thermal signature will be added to populate the environment and make proper target ID procedures mandatory.

2.Infantry will get much better bunkers than the current death mounds.

3.Walls, fences, impenetrable vegetation barriers for the map editor

4.Additional obstacles, e.g. barbed wire rolls

The old plans are still valid, it's just that the pace of their implementation is slower than anticipated. In any case, with the announcement of the preorder phase we will publish the definite list of changes in SB Pro PE since version 2.328, so everybody can then check what's in the package for $25.- and what is not.

Modular buildings sounds like a interesting way to take this forward Ssnake, especially if you can find a way to damage or destroy them as well, that would be brilliant.

Simple building blocks is a neat way too, a basic shape with perhaps 4 applications, 1 can be skinned as an aircraft hangar, another as a warehouse, another as a row of shops etc etc. Squares, longs short and talls and some rounds for small fuel tanks and the like, the rest is in the skinning.

I would love to able to build a decent looking airfield or a harbour, to be honest I have the several maps laid out already, I just need to put something on it apart from roads and trees. If you know DCS Black Shark look at how they tackled that, no great science involved, just basic stuff really nicely skinned.

Must be more patient I know but when you get to my age you will understand haste !!!

Keep going mate, looking forward to whatever you manage to do. Still the best Tank Sim and some.
