AT-7/AT-13 Saxhorn
Overview
The AT-7 Saxhorn (Rus: 9K115 Metis ["Mongrel"]) is a wire guided Anti-Tank Guided Missile developed by the Soviet Union in the mid 1970s as a response to the U.S. M47 Dragon man-portable ATGM system. Essentially a simplified and lighter version of the AT-4 Spigot, the AT-7 entered service in 1979 to supplement the heavier AT-4 at the company level. The system consists of the 9P151 launcher post (tripod) to which is fitted the 9S816 guidance box - with the containerized missile above - and (for the AT-13) the fixed 6x 1PBN86-VI thermal sight to the front. The day sight features a fixed 6x magnification telescope with a 6° field of view.
A relatively simple design, the AT-7's is similar in range to that of the western MILAN and Dragon ATGM systems, but with a superior warhead and faster flight times. The modelled version is the standard 9P151 launcher (rev. 4.250) capable of firing the full 9M115 family of missiles including the 9M115M Metis-M, M1, and FAE variants (NATO: AT-13 Saxhorn and Saxhorn-2).
For scenario design purposes, the AT-7/AT-13 will generally be deployed with three launchers per motor rifle company (one per platoon) and four missiles (five for the AT-13) carried per launcher.
Entering service in 1979 the AT-7 saw only modest use and export due to its relatively small warhead, but the AT-13 (1992) is still in production and has proven very popular with governmental and irregular forces across the Near, Middle, and Far-East.
Employment
The observer position F8 displays a third-person view of the AT-7 team.
Pressing N provides a magnified third-person view (and only if the Realism setting is Low or Medium (Rev. 3.002)).
F7 or F11 switches to the first-person view of the "Squad Leader"/gunner.
Pressing N will brings the Squad Leader's binoculars into action. This can not be used to engage targets.
Pressing F2 accesses the weapon sights. From here the mouse or joystick may be used to aim, and the space bar/default trigger to fire. As with other SACLOS guided weapons, all the gunner needs to do is keep the reticle centered on the target. The AT-7's 9S816 guidance box does not have thermal or night vision capability, but NVG (Night Vision Goggle) views for the squad leader/members (Num +) are available under appropriate lighting conditions if the team is so equipped (rev. 2.640). Note that NVGs are useful for observation only, and have no effect on weapon sights. |
|
The AT-13 features a 1PBN86-VI thermal sight with a fixed 6x magnification. Num + toggles between the day and thermal sights while in the F2 sight view. Unlike other thermal sights in Steel Beasts Professional contrast, focus, gain, and polarity are all fixed.
Along the left side of the weapon sight is a descending stadia type scale used to determine target range. This should be used to ensure the desired target is within the AT-7's 40-1000m (80-2500m for the AT-13) engagement envelope. |
