Mortar team
Appearing with version update 3.002, Mortar teams provide indirect fire support for Infantry platoons and companies utilizing either light 60mm or medium 81mm ordnance. These weapons fire High Explosive (HE) and Smoke munitions out to an effective range of 1900-5500m. Although best left under AI control, it is possible for players to man mortar teams directly, and thanks to their high angle of fire, mortars under player control may drop bombs into enemy defilade positions as little as twenty meters away from their position. Beginning with version 4.000, dismounted mortar teams may use any movement type available, but fatigue much quicker when jogging or sprinting compared to regular infantry units.
The observer position F8 displays a third-person view of the Mortar team. Note that from this view the player may order a dismounted mortar team to suppress a certain location that is in direct line of sight using the "Suppress Here" command from the right-click context menu, thereby initiating a fire mission without going through the Call for Fire dialog.
Pressing N provides a magnified third-person view.
F7 or F11 switches to the first-person view of the "Squad Leader"/gunner.
Pressing N will brings the Squad Leader's binoculars into action. This can not be used to engage targets.
Pressing F2 accesses the weapon "sights". Lacking a modeled aiming circle, aiming stakes, and quadrant sight, the player is instead presented with a upward view inline with the mortar's tube angle. From here the mouse or joystick may be used to "aim" by adjusting the mortar's firing angle, and using the space bar/default trigger to fire. Quickly switching to the bino view allows the gunner to sense the fall of his shot, then switching back to the "sight" view to attempt to adjust the next round. As adjustments for windage require repositioning of the mortar, the unit's initial placement is critical to its effectiveness. The mortar "sight" does not have TI capability, but NVG views (Num +) are available under appropriate lighting conditions if the team is so equipped (rev. 2.640). |
Selecting Weapon Type
With no external differences modeled between the 60mm and 81mm mortars, simply specify the mortar type by selecting the desired ammunition type in the unit's ammunition window.
