General

Designed and produced by the Kurganmashzavod ("Kurgan Machine Building Plant"), the BMP-3 is a unique IFV that entered Russian military service in 1987. A hybrid design, based on the Obyekt 685 light tank, the BMP-3 is heavily armed with a 100mm rifled low-pressure gun, a coaxial 30mm autocannon, a coaxial 7.62mm machine gun, two 7.62mm bow machine guns, and can fire the laser-guided 9M117 ATGM "Bastion" (AT-10 Stabber) offering a version dependent range of 4000-5500m. The vehicle is fully amphibious, carries seven infantrymen, and a crew of three. The modeled version is the BMP-3M, upgraded over the base model with a new turret including: a new ammunition loading system, new automatic fire control system with ballistic computer, SOZH gunner's sight, and commander's vision device with laser illuminator.

All told, the BMP-3 presents a small, quick, and potent adversary, carrying more firepower, and able to fight at longer ranges than comparable western IFVs. Although vulnerable to tanks, modern autocannon, infantry anti-tank weapons, and artillery, along with facing criticisms about high cost and the AT-10s lack of penetrating power, the BMP-3 is a well-balanced and effective fighting unit.

The BMP-3 carries 6 dismounts, equipped with 3 RPG-26 anti-armor weapons, a PKM, and 5.45mm rifles.

Note: due to current limitations with Steel Beast's vehicle implementation, the BMP-3 lacks use of its 100mm gun; this will be corrected in a future release.

Beginning with revision 4.156 the BMP-3 may be equipped with the Diehl Active Vehicle Protection System (AVePS) to enhance protection against RPG and ATGM threats.
