  1. January 31st, 1991 - Retaking Khafji

    Retaking Khafji
    January 31st, 1991

The last in my admittedly very crude and unpolished series of "Early Gulf War" scenarios covering the lesser battles that did not heavily involve Coalition units equipped with the vehicles we're familiar with.  I'll be back in the next week or so with my attempt at recreating some of the other, more well known, engagements.

This scenario is inspired by and roughly based on the historical battle that took place on January 31st into February 1st, 1991, during the Persian Gulf War.

Qatari AMX-30 tanks are represented by Leopard 1A5s with the thermal imager disabled.
The AMX-30 of the time also completely lacked a stabilizer, and didn't have an LRF, but these are left enabled for now to make the scenario a bit less painful for newer players.

The Saudi National Guard used V-150 armored cars, apparently in several configurations.
These will be simulated using the LAV-25 for this scenario.
The V-150 is a four wheel armored car, and in Saudi service armament ranged from open top vehicles armed only with machine guns, apparently an M2 possibly with some 7.62s as well, to TOW missile launchers, and even an enclosed turret with a 90mm Cockerill low pressure gun.
The documentation I had available only referred to Qatari AMX-30s and Saudi V-150s taking part in this battle.  For that reason, I chose to use the LAV-25 as a similar, lightly armored, APC, and to allow the 25mm turret to stand in as a replacement for the combined firepower of vehicles with M2 machine guns and those with the 90mm gun.

Although Kuwaiti forces did not directly participate in most battles, there are two platoons of T-72As in this mission to represent the Kuwaiti M-84s (Yugoslavian T-72) that escaped the invasion.  It should be very possible to complete this scenario without them being involved, but they are offered regardless.

The scenario takes place in two phases, each with the player in command of a roughly company sized element.
Completion should take about an hour.

The third phase isn't really simulated or scripted or anything, but you can micro-manage the infantry capturing the first row of apartment buildings if you wish to do so, and it isn't required for victory.

  2. 1991 01 29 - The Battle at Umm Hujul

    The Battle at Umm Hujul

This is a company sized meeting engagement set just before midnight on January 29th, 1991, just prior to the successful capture of Khafji by Iraqi forces.  Although one Iraqi column managed to make it through to capture the coastal town of Ras Al-Khafji, the other two were turned back shortly after crossing the border.  The furthest west of the three columns was engaged first by light recon elements, then by Delta Company of the 3rd Light Armored Infantry Battalion with their LAVs, and finally by TF Shepherd.

This scenario begins at the third phase of the battle.  As Delta company took losses and was forced back, Task Force Shepherd advanced to attack the Iraqi forces in turn.

Although no Coalition tanks, to my knowledge, participated in this engagement, I have elected to provide a platoon of M60A3's in this scenario.  Due to problems with the AI's ability to spot and engage targets at night with passive IR, the A3 TTS version is used.

This scenario should take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour to complete, depending on how slowly and cautiously you move your units.

The majority of information for this scenario was obtained from a thesis paper written by Maj. Scott Williams, USMC.

  3. 1991/01/29 - Attack on Khafji

This scenario is a relatively simple, straight forward, "shoot them in the face" type scenario.

    January 29th, 1991
Iraqi armored and mechanized units cross the Saudi border in force.  Hoping for a quick victory, instead, most attacks are promptly beaten back.  The little success that is had comes at the border city of Khafji.
In this scenario you will take command of a platoon of LAV-25 (NZLAV) from a Marine Light Armor unit, supported by LAV-AT (M901s) and a few other assets, and try to create as much havoc and delay on the highway as you can for the advancing Iraqis.

Currently, destroyed vehicles are removed after 5 seconds.  This unblocks Red's line of advance and your sight lines for missile launches.
Although uploaded in the single player area, this would be a great sceanrio to play with a small group, with each player taking command of one unit.

  4. 1982 - Desperate Times

It's 1982 in the Haune Valley.  You are in charge of a company sized element of a West German Heimatchütz Brigade.
Your tanks are M48A2GA2s, an updated version of the elderly M48A2 Patton, although armed with a 105mm main gun, they are lacking stabilizers and do not have thermal sights.  (Simulated with M60A3, stabilizer disabled)
Your infantry are mounted in M113A2G and Unimogs, meaning they have to rely upon their own firepower.

With these outdated tanks and the little support you have, your mission is to hold the line, and beat off any Soviet attacks, until help can arrive.

  10. Decisive Engagement - NTC '98

A decisive engagement is when a unit is fully committed and cannot maneuver or extricate itself. The action must be fought to a conclusion and won or lost with the forces at hand.

This scenario is set at the National Training Center and features a late 1990s US armor company team conducting a hasty defense against a Krasnovian tank battalion executing a spoiling attack. The equipment and ammunition used by both sides would have been seen as 'cutting edge' at the time. This scenario is designed to present a challenge to experienced players.

This scenario aims to be run as a tactical decision game that can be completed from planning to the AAR within 40 minutes. The recommended timeline for this format is below:

  14. Defense At Vollsjo

    Defense at Vollsjo
    by Apocalypse
Based on the 2024 LHI Scania Campaign - developed by Los

The silence of the commanders tank was suddenly interrupted by the cackling of the radio.

The entire crew could hear the unmistakable voice: the Battalion commander of the 228th Mech Battalion was speaking loudly and rapidly firing instructions to his subordinate commander like a machine gun.

"Yes sir, immediate Torrike attack against Vollsjo", "yes sir. immediate evacuation of government personnel from Vollsjo" repeated the company commander, vocalizing it loud enough so that he could confirm his tasks and prepare to pass them to his subordinates. After a short exchange and confirmation of his new mission, the captain jumped from his turret to the side of his tank where his First Sergeant and XO were waiting.

The captain, who hadn't slept in 72 hours was pushing himself beyond his physical limits. His home was near the Torrike border and rumors were circulating that his wife and two children were missing and presumed dead. Some of the men in the company were from the area and were quite literally fighting in their own back yards

"Sir, does he know that we only have a handful of tanks and a few civilians defending?" quipped the First Sergeant. "Of course he does" the Captain quickly responded then turned to the XO, "bring the platoon leaders to my vehicle immediately".

Moments later the XO returned with two lieutenants and a staff sergeant.
"Gentlemen, we've received word from the Battalion Commander and here's the situation:
2nd Company will attack in our north, towards Frannigen. They are stepping off in approximately 30 minutes and we've been ordered to HOLD Vollsjo.

A Torrike Mechanized Infantry Battalion is mounting a counter-attack against Vollsjo to seize the bridges. We suspect that they will attack along two axis - to the north and from the east. They will attack with three companies spread between each axis, each supported with a platoon of tanks. We expect that their Battalion scout platoon is already observing us and will initiate movement shortly. We expect the enemy to employ their organic mortars and also artillery to suppress our forces.

It is also possible that the Torrike's will reinforce their MIBN with a second tank company that will attack with their recon element. And if that wasn't enough - we're also hearing that the enemy will be supported by helicopter gunships.

We expect civilians to flee there village but there are also 20 civilian government employees in Vollsjo that we MUST evacuate. They have made a valiant effort in keeping the essential services of Vollsjo functioning so that the Home Guard could survive, but the governor has issued the order for their immediate evacuation and we will need to evacuate them to prevent their deaths or capture - the Battalion commander has sent a mounted element to assist us with that task, but they are coming from the north, through disputed area.

We are expecting enemy scouts to make contact with us in approximately 8 minutes, and with their main body in 20 minutes. We must hold the bridges. Are there any questions?"

After the previous round of the pursuit battle, A Company lost an entire platoon of M2A2s and was forced to retreat. A Company's mission is to hold and defend OBJ1 and OBJ2, guarding these two objectives until B Company arrives to take over your position. The enemy's second wave of attack forces should be on their way, so do not underestimate them. You will receive mortar and helicopter support, as well as assistance from three fixed-wing aircraft. Furthermore, to enhance your combat capabilities, an additional platoon of M2A2s has been dispatched and is on its way, expected to arrive at OBJ1 within 5-10 minutes, waiting for your orders. Since it's nighttime, make the most of our night vision advantage over the enemy. Keep in mind that the enemy is equipped with T72B3 tanks, which also have night vision capabilities. Best of luck! Please note that HQ does not want A Company to incur excessive losses. If your losses exceed 50%, you will fail this mission.

After repelling the first wave of Soviet attacks, the enemy's remaining forces have begun to retreat. The enemy consists of tanks, BMPs, and mechanized infantry, and their exact strength is unclear, given their hasty withdrawal. A company's mission is to scout the enemy's rear guard, and clear out the enemy forces at Objective 1 and Objective 2. Our forces include a platoon of M1A1 tanks, a platoon of M2A2s, and a platoon of mechanized infantry mounted in M113s. You can request mortar and helicopter support, but there is no guarantee that suitable forces will be available to support you. Additionally, you have three fixed-wing aircraft providing close air support (CAS) on nine occasions. It's important to note that due to the intense fighting earlier, our forces have suffered heavy losses. Please make the most of your units and strategically defeat the enemy. If you lose more than four tanks and all of the M2A2s, the mission will result in failure. This is the second scenario of the ARMORED BRIGADE's DEFEND FULDA. In the AB scenario, due to unfavorable terrain, I attempted several times without success. Therefore, I've moved this task to the SB scenario, hoping that everyone can collectively tackle this challenging situation.
